Visual and Verbal

Describe a memorable character in the film and explain visual and verbal techniques that made them memorable.

Four techniques that are used to make the character Lola more memorable are camera movement, music, colour and film quality.

Lola is an important character because she is an active fit young woman. She is running to save her love Mannie, rob a bank and run from the cops. The camera movement the director uses is used effectively. It makes the audience feel as though they are running with her. I felt that the camera made me feel as if I was right behind or in front of her as she was running to and from the different things. In all, the camera movement made Lola a very memorable character as it felt like we were with her through her whole journey.

The music in run Lola run is another feature that makes Lola more memorable. During each section that she is running, there is a fast heavy techno music that is played. This music is good a building tension in times of stress but also effective at demonstrating speed and urgency when Lola is running to and from her destination. In contrast, when Lola and Mannie have escaped from the store after robbing it, there is a light classical music which is used to make the scene more relaxed and like everything is all going to be ok. The music fits with the scene but also ads a lot to it which is why it makes Lola a lot more memorable.

The third feature to make Lola a much more memorable character is the use of colour. The main colour the director uses for Lola is red. This colour describes Lola's personality well as she is feisty, energetic and fast. When Lola is on screen, she stands out very well because of her bright red hair.
Lola’s love for Mannie is strong and this is shown by the red filter in the scene where Lola and Mannie are in bed together. It makes this part memorable as it is the only section in the film that uses a coloured filter. Colour is used very well in the film Run Lola run to make certain sections and characters stand out from others and become more memorable.

The fourth and final feature used to make Lola memorable is the use of high definition film. In every scene that Lola is in, the film that is used is high definition 35mm tape. This makes all the imagery much sharper in colour and shape. It defines the scenery and actor better. The use of 35mm shows that Lola is more important than other characters.
In contrast, the scenes that Lola and Mannie are not in are filmed using low definition VHS. The VHS is much lower resolution and the imagery looks grainy and dull. All the colour in VHS is seemingly dull compared to 35mm. the different film qualities are used well to make characters like Lola become more memorable.

In conclusion, the director effectively uses visual and verbal techniques to make Lola more memorable.
